Visit the incredible Blue Lagoon, Malta

The blue lagoon is one of the most famous coves in Malta and perhaps one of the most beautiful in the world. It is featured in film shoots and commercials and is the undisputed star of the Maltese coastal tourism attractions. The Blue Lagoon on the island of Comino, with its fascinating crystal-clear waters, is one of those natural spots that should not be missed while visiting Malta.

The Blue Lagoon: a paradise in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea

It is often said that the finest perfumes come in small bottles. Those minimal proportions of luxury and exclusivity could also apply to this spectacular Mediterranean cove.

Malta's Blue Lagoon is a natural gift of small size and during the peak season it can be difficult to find a spot. The reason? Few places in the world can boast so much beauty concentrated in so little space.

The Blue Lagoon is essentially a natural pool of turquoise and crystalline waters that preserves the charm of simplicity. A beautiful place in its simplicity: crystal clear waters of an intense blue colour, tiny banks of white sand and stupendous rock formations that attract the most diverse flora and fauna.

Ideas for a day trip to the Comino Island
Outdoor activities on Comino Island
Although it is one of the main tourist attractions on the island of Comino, the Blue Lagoon is not the only leisure acitvity on the island. Despite an area of just over 3.5 square kilometres, the island has a wide range of activities for outdoor enthusiasts.

Visit St Mary’s Bay and St Nicholas Bay
St. Mary's Bay and St. Nicholas Bay are less popular than the Blue Lagoon, but have similar characteristics. They are a great alternative to get away from the more touristy attraction and enjoy a day of relaxation in a more exclusive and relaxed environment.

Hiking on Comino Island
On the other hand, it's not all sea and sand on the island of Comino. Those who are not in a hurry and want to discover the natural wealth of this destination on foot can take a four-hour hiking route that takes in the most outstanding spots and offers a fabulous view of the neighbouring island of Gozo.

Tasting tradional Malteese food
Whatever your plan is, it's impossible to visit Comino Island and not end up sitting at one of its beach bars enjoying a refreshing drink and a Hoz-Biz-Zejt (traditional Maltese bread). This Maltese snack is a light and tasty treat for those days at the beach. It's made with a splash of tomatoes, basil, onion, capers, olives and tuna on slices of toasted bread rubbed with garlic and oil, and can be found in almost any bar or restaurant on the island.

How to get to the Blue Lagoon?
This popular natural pool occupies a prime location between Comino and the small island of Cominotto in the north of Malta. Regular ferry services connect the two destinations from the towns of Cirkewwa and Mgarr and take just 20 minutes between March and December.

However, there are much more attractive options for visiting the Blue Lagoon and other natural attractions in the area. Boats depart daily from the town of St Julian's for day trips to Comino, Crystal Cave and St Mary's Cave, with stops for snorkelling and all sorts of water activities in a picture-perfect natural setting.

This coastal town is also a good place to stay during your stay in Malta. Mercure St. Julian's Malta offers excellent transport links to the rest of the island and a great range of services for a holiday of true Mediterranean luxury.
