You’ll want to sample the scene in this diverse and fun Welsh city

"Some say Cardiff has the best nightlife in the UK. Some even go as far as to state that nobody parties like the Welsh… Make your own mind up and sample the Welsh city’s nightlife, whether in its sleek cocktail bars, smart restaurants or traditional pubs. After a late night out, rest and relaxation can be found in our Mercure hotels near Cardiff."

Fine dining stars
When looking for an excellent meal out in Cardiff you’ll be spoilt for choice. Try the local favourite, The Potted Pig for pared down British cooking served in an old bank vault. Carnivores will appreciate the duck hash, steaks and slow roast pork belly. Prefer fish? Book a table at Fish at 85 on Pontcanna Street, famous for supplying some of the UK’s top restaurants and the Royal household. Lemon sole and scallops are on the ‘must-try’ list. For culinary wonders further afield why not venture out to The Walnut Tree at Abergavenny? An hour away, the charming country inn has earned a Michelin star for its fantastic cuisine.
Coffee & cakes
For a quick refuel, don’t miss the local delicacies that are Welsh cakes. Try them at the aptly named Fabulous Welshcakes store on Mermaid Quay where you can sample them warm, right off the bake-stone. For a quick cup of coffee to remember, The Plan is set in a beautiful Grade II listed building in Morgan’s Arcade. If in doubt, ask the barista for advice on bean variety and provenance.
Cocktails & dreams
Cardiff has gained a reputation as one of the UK’s liveliest spots at night and it’s largely thanks to its rainbow of cocktail bars. Try the Buffalo on Windsor Street with its extensive cocktail menu and live music, or for a good Mojito head to Milgi on City Road. You can try the traditional recipe or be more adventurous and let the mixologist surprise you. The Lychee and Basil Mojito is one of the most popular choices, for those who want to try something new. It’s also got an impressive vegan and gluten-free menu.
Best of exotic
And, if you prefer a curry, there’s always Mowgli’s for a spicy evening out. One of Cardiff’s best Indian restaurants, the £15.95 five-course menu is a real treat. At the award-winning Purple Poppadom it’s all about chef Anand George’s fresh nouvelle Indian dishes, featuring refined flavours and plenty of seafood.
And, for a pint…
The city certainly has its fair share of traditional pubs for a laid back pint. Try The Lansdowne on Lansdowne Road, a new favourite serving ales, Weiss beers, cider and even pickled eggs. Those seeking a good craft beer and a beer garden to sample it in should try the Pen and Wig just a few minutes’ walk from Queen Street. The City Arms is another classic address in town, with beers and ciders straight from the cask, on tap and in bottles.
