Gebelein
The village of Gebelein, a complex of archaeological sites, is about 30 km south-west of Luxor and on the western bank of the Nile River. The two hills at the site, that offer you a mesmerizing view of the Nile Valley, give it its Arabic name Gebelein which means “two mountains”. It was one of the oldest capitals of the Egyptian states before it was a kingdom, according to archeologists. The temple of Hathor, goddess of love, beauty and motherhood, was found in the area that was dedicated to her. Papyri, royal stela, mummies and tomb of the Iti were all found in Gebelein and are now housed in worldwide museums.
