If you hear strange sounds while visiting Constitution Hill, the “Robben Island of Johannesburg”, a prison that has had both Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi as inmates, do not panic. It is apparently one of the many ghosts that haunt the place. The most famous is the ghost of Daisy de Melker, a notorious South African. Her ghost is said to linger near her former cell, in the wing reserved for female inmates, but wanders frequently… so frequently, in fact, that when a door is blown open, South Africans say that the ghost of Daisy de Melker is passing through. A piece of advice then: close the door and lock it too!
