With its basilica and its old Jesuit College, Terreiro de Jesus Square, in Salvador’s city centre, is one of the oldest. It is a pleasant place to linger and enjoy the sunshine. But not just that. For followers of Candomblé, the afro-Brazilian religion, the square is also a sacred site. Believers come to dance here to invoke their gods and what they call orixás. When orixás are invoked, the person’s problems are resolved and diseases cured. Either-or, you have a good chance of returning from Salvador in good spirits.
