LIGHT IN THE NIGHT

Montevideo

Plaza Independencia 848 - Montevideo

The History of Architecture
Skirting the presidential palace, a 160-year-old theatre, and the grand gateway leading to the old city, Plaza Independencia is one of the main attractions of Montevideo. What is surprising is this odd-looking tower rising up 95 metres high, at an angle to the square. Atop, a dome. For what purpose? Originally, Palacio Salvo was meant to also serve as a lighthouse. Its light was supposed to even reach Buenos Aires, so that the two cities could be eternally united. The problem? The light was disturbing navigation. So the tower, which now houses offices, shops and apartments, no longer serves as a beacon. But you can still climb up to the top to enjoy the panoramic views. And light up your trip.Plaza Independencia 848 - Montevideo
