ARCHES OVER THE RIVER

Vienna

Zollamtssteg

The Zollamtssteg (‘customs house pedestrian bridge’) links Vienna’s third and first districts and crosses the Wien shortly before it flows into the Danube Canal. The bridge underneath it, the Zollamtsbrücke (‘customs house bridge’) does exactly the same. So why was this larger diagonal bridge built, if pedestrians and cyclists can cross the river using the pedestrian bridge? If you wait a moment, you’ll find out – after a few minutes at most, the first U-Bahn underground train will clatter past. The Zollamtsbrücke has been part of the Viennese railway system since 1900 and is now part of the U4 U-Bahn line. Seen from above, the whole thing is an architectural masterpiece from the turn of the century. For the most impressive experience, take a ride on the U-Bahn across the bridge, passing underneath the pedestrian bridge. Simply catch a train towards Schwedenplatz from Landstrasse station. Make sure you grab a window seat!
