Marvin Gaye arrived in Ostend on 14 February 1981 by boat with his son, Bubby. Gaye was so debased: he was struggling with a serious drug addiction, his second marriage went on the rocks and he had financial problems. Penniless and depressed, Gaye lived in Ostend and gradually got his life back on track. He left the drugs and found his confidence back. And most importantly, he began performing and writing music again.
It was in Ostend that the hit "Sexual Healing" and his comeback album 'Midnight Love' was created. Sexual healing was not just a monster hit, but a 100% Belgian product: written in Ostend, recorded in a studio in Brussels and with an accompanying video filmed in the Ostend casino.
