Rue de Siam Brest

An icon in the Sept Saints neighbourhood of Brest, Rue de Siam has a welcoming atmosphere that has made it one of the most well-known streets of any port in the world. This major shopping street was reconstructed after 1945. But as you stroll down it, you can still imagine how crews of sailors would charge down the street on their night off, eager to pick up the girls waiting for them. During the Occupation of World War II, the Germans continued this saucy tradition by setting up a brothel in the synagogue. The street’s unique atmosphere was later celebrated by French poet Jacques Prévert, who describes meeting Barbara there in his poem by the same name. Édith Piaf sung about the street, too. A pretty cool soundtrack to accompany your walk.
