A VERY COOL HISTORY

A VERY COOL HISTORY

Cap d-Agde

Rue Louis Bages

Cap d’Agde has always had a rather… cool feel to it. In fact, it's one spot where the locals never have to go without a bit of cold relief on a hot summer afternoon. That's because the old city of Agde was once the site of three vast underground silos, called glacières, carved out some time between the Middle Ages and the 17th century. Blocks of ice were extracted in winter and stored in these immense silos. When filled, they were tightly sealed until summer, when the ice blocks were removed and distributed. As soon as Rue Picpailles was covered with straw to help the extraction process, locals rushed to a shop located under the arcades of Maison du Cœur de Ville to buy it. Even today visiting this giant cooler in the heat of summer is a real treat!
