AN AMERICAN TRIBUTE TO A FRENCH HERO

Paris

35 Rue de Picpus

Weird & Wonderful
There’s a surprising little cemetery hidden in the middle of the larger cemetery on Rue de Picpus, a few steps from the Gare de Lyon. A place with a rather unusual history, this spot is closed to the public and situated away from everything, making it the only private cemetery in the capital. Created at the time of the French Revolution, the plot holds some 1,300 graves, many of which contain the remains of aristocrats guillotined in the Place de la Nation during the Reign of Terror. The names, crests and mottos of many noble families can be seen on the headstones. The most unusual tomb has to be that of the French hero of American independence – the Marquis de LaFayette. For more than a century, the grave has been maintained by the United States Embassy, which ensures that an American flag always flies above it.
