Want to know more about the large tent-like building just off Boulevard du Temple? Inaugurated in 1852, Cirque d'Hiver is the oldest and most beautiful circus in the world. Since 1934, it has belonged to the Bouglione family, the mythical circus dynasty. However, the family's legend could have been stopped short. One day in 1920, in full view of everyone, Joseph (known as Sampion) Bouglione was attacked by his lions while he was in their cage. He was the only one who was able to put his head in their mouths after wiping their fangs with his handkerchief. This time he was saved by one of his sons, Joseph, then age 16. Later, the courageous Joseph Jr., one of the best tamers of his time, met Rosalie Van Been, another child of the stage. In 1928, they exchanged their vows – in the lion's cage, no less! – before marrying in front of the mayor and the parish priest.
