THE RETURN OF THE BIGORRE BLACK PIG

Saint-Lary-Soulan

Quartier Arreclots

In the Haute Vallée d'Aure, less than a kilometre from Saint-Lary, sits the village of Vignec, the self-proclaimed capital of the famous Bigorre black pig. This animal produces a ham that’s arguably as famous as the Iberian Bellota. Take a stroll, taking in sublime views of the Pyrenean peaks, and build up an appetite. To try some of the famous ham for yourself, head through the gate at Ferme Vignécoise. For 20 years, the Coustallat family has cultivated the special local breed that was once forgotten due to the animal's lower productivity. This friendly spot features an educational farm – perfect for kids – and an eco-museum dedicated to mountain life. There’s also a restaurant and a shop. In summer, wander up to the green pastures and enjoy a countryside snack among the animals.
