Kino Durchsfenster: Friedrichshain, Berlin

Hidden Gems
Self-proclaimed as Berlin's coolest neighbourhood, Friedrichshain in the north-east of the city has a lot going for it: cobbled streets, punks, one of the world's most famous clubs - the Berghain - and a secret cinema. It's called the Durchsfenster Kino (literally: the through-the-window cinema). The way in is through a ground floor window of a former squat painted in unmissably bright colours. It may be easy to find, but it's not so easy to enter, because there's nothing to show which window to knock on. Going inside continues the journey into the unknown, because no one knows which films are going to be screened every evening. The doors - or rather windows - open at 9 pm.
