Mauerpark literally means “wall park”. Why such a name? Simply because a segment of the Berlin Wall used to cut across the centre of the park. Popular with locals, the park hosts a large flea market every Sunday, attracting musicians, singers, clowns and graffiti artists from the entire city. But the attraction is elsewhere. Certain weeks, when the weather is fine and he is in the mood, the so-called Joe Hatchiban, Mauerpark’s own celebrity, gets up on the stage in his Bearpit Karaoke, and encourages the boldest to belt out in song.
