BRINGERS OF WIND OR OF RAIN?

Bari

Chiesa di San Gregorio - Piazzetta LXII Marinai 32

Vendelùse, meaning “bringers or wind” in Barese accent, are the wooden and papier-mâché statues used every other year for the procession held on Good Friday. The collection of sculptures belonging to a cycle of scenes from the Passion of Christ is preserved in the Church of St. Gregory, the most ancient in town, and as stated in the eleven funerary inscriptions on the outer perimeter of the Romanic building, it is also the most loved by the people of Bari. When the vendelùse are brought outside for the procession, the devotees, the carriers, and of course the statues, are always accompanied by a strong wind. Some prefer the alternate statues representing the Cult of the Vallisa, nicknamed “statue delle piangenti” (crying statues) because when they are used for the procession, rain never fails to wash the eyes of the church people.
