Arco della Neve

The Arco della Neve (arch of snow) suggests an incredible landscape of Bari covered in snow. In reality it was simply a place where snow – or more precisely ice – was sold in the past.
In the summer it was crucial for the preparation of granitas, ice cream, and to freshen drinks. Furthermore, before the existence of freezers, the ice was also used to preserve food and for medical purposes. The Arco della Neve was the place where the ice was made, kept below street level wrapped in straw bags, and sold. It was handmade by the insaccaneve (“snow-baggers”) from the raw material shipped from the icehouses in the nearby villages.
