As well as being a statue of coloured bronze that greets tourists that come out of the station, Harlequin is first and foremost one of the most well-known masks in popular tradition and of the Comedy of Art. The symbol of Italian carnival and the burlesque spirit originates from Zanni, a personage of rural origins, represented with a curved nose and wearing a form or dress like a tunic worn by farmers.
Harlequin’s best friend is Bergamasque, too: intriguing, cunning and sometimes inappropriate, Brighella is a servant just like his accomplice.
