Six kilometres of walls built to defend the city and transform it into a fortress. This was the aim of the muraine, the medieval walls built by the Visconti during the middle ages. Apart from changing their appearance, the Republic of Venice’s variations during project work earned the nickname Venetian walls. In 1901 they were completely knocked down because of the abolition of the levying of customs duty and for their appearance: would their 6 metre length still have been able to defend the city?
