Near the tower of the mules, the Garisenda is recognisable because it is the smaller one of the two. The leaning is owed to a structural ground failure and of the foundations during construction half-way through the XIVth century, making it necessary to lower its height. The feeling you get in the shade of the towers has been described perfectly by Dante in the Divine Comedy. As read on the sign fixed on the base, it seems tat the Garisenda is about to fall but for now it remains an optical illusion.
