What is the origin of the term “bankruptcy” defining an insolvent, thus failed, entrepreneur? The word has medieval origins and a corner of Bologna may help us track them down. In Palazzo Re Enzo there are the ancient premises of the stock exchange, where sellers kept their wooden banks. The banks were literally broken open (or “ruptured”) once the sellers could no longer pay their goods and suppliers.
Successively the economic life of Bologna moved to the Salaborsa (namely “stock exchange hall”) across the street, which is a library today; by walking down its stairs bringing you to underground level, you may visit the Etruscan and Roman ruins of public and religious buildings. Not to worry, a hammer wasn’t used in this case.
