Catania

Via S. Giovanni Li Cuti

In Catania you can dive into what was once a pool of lava. The Etna and its black lava flows reached all the way to the beach of San Giovanni li Cuti, creating a unique landscape. In a far past, the city hosted a church named after San Giovanni Battista (Saint John the Baptist), and today, as well as the traditional port, the same location hosts a dark beach formed by li cuti, black volcanic rocks, brought to the sea after various eruptions of the Etna. San Giovanni li Cuti is an extremely popular venue for the people of Catania, both during the day in its various beach resorts, and at night in its many waterfront restaurants and clubs. At sunset, the red sun shining on the water and dark rocks create a scene that reminds the viewer of the Etna in all its heat and power.
