A LEMON SELTZ KEEPS THE THIRST AWAY
Catania
Chiosco Costa - Piazza Spirito Santo
To quench the city’s heat, there is only one 100% local drink: the lemon seltz, sold by the many street kiosks.
This habit had birth in 1896, with the opening of the Costa kiosk, a circular wooden structure that has handed out glasses of sparkling water and lemon through its window for over a century. Immediately the booth attracted groups of thirsty ladies, and consequently herds of young men: the new space requirement gave birth to the gazebo fad, known locally to often cause traffic congestion issues. Still today, the old Catanese tradition of the seltz resists, and the kiosks remain a hangout spot to live the city, not only in the summertime.
