The nickname chosen by the people of Catania for the garden may sound unusual: Garden of the Yawn, or in the local dialect Villa 'e Varagghi. This little garden enclosed by the train station bridge and the ancient door Porta Uzeda, is not a magical place where obscure spells are cast on the people who walk there or relax in the sun. The garden is nicknamed after the favorite activity of its past visitors, mostly senior citizens: yawning on the benches of the Giardino Pacini, for the true love of loafing about outdoors. Today the frenetic modern life has cut the time dedicated to yawning, but if you find yourself on a bench of the Pacini Garden, it doesn’t seem so difficult to revive this ancient traditional practice…
