WHAT’S THE FREQUENCY, CATANIA?

It was in the early 90s that Catania entered a breathtaking florid musical period, which brought it to be the setting for discovery and international affirmation of numerous artists, so much as to be nicknamed “The Italian Seattle”. A pioneer of such musical push was Francesco Virlinzi, thanks to which the local “songwriteress” Carmen Consoli emerged. It was again Virlinzi who was perhaps the first Italian to listen to the group that was rampant on U.S. radios: R.E.M. His passion was so great that Polygram, their distribution label for Italy, recorded 8,000 copies sold in Catania, compared to only 800 in the rest of Italy.
