Canto de’ Bischeri - Via dell'Oriuolo

Bischero, one of the most popular expressions in the Florentine dialect, means meek, naïve, or simply idiotic. The secret behind this word derives from a surname, Bischeri, and an episode occurred at the end of the 1200s. Before building the Cathedral, the government offered a certain sum of money to buy the area on which the palace was located. The Bischeri family kept refusing with the aim of reaching an increasingly high bid, to then find itself without a home, since the government decided to confiscate it or, as the legend tells, set it on fire. From that day on bischero was on everyone’s lips. The family was forced to transfer, and change name. A plaque and a word still commemorate this event.
