Legend tells that the painting of the Annunciation was completed by an angel.
The fresco was commissioned to the lesser-known painter Bartolomeo, who drew the whole scene but couldn’t even start outlining the face of the Virgin Mary. Upon waking up from a dream, the artist realized that the face, thus the painting, had been finished by an angel.
The artwork is venerated still today, especially by young couples of newlyweds who leave bouquets of flowers in front of the Virgin Mary asking her to protect their union.
