This was the idea behind the invention of the mampae, the moving panels, folded upwards and fixed to the windows of the palaces of Genoa. With their name deriving from the Spanish word mampara (folding screen) and the Latin word manu parare (shading your eyes), the structures were once covered in white cloth, and now by a metal sheet. Like those in Via di Mascherona, the mampae reflect the sky, capture light, and make it trickle into the lives of the people of Genoa.
