HIDDEN CLOISTERS

HIDDEN CLOISTERS

Genoa

Chiesa di Sant'Agostino - Piazza Renato Negri 7

The deconsecrated Church of Saint Augustine, which now hosts conferences, and plays by the Teatro della Tosse (“cough theatre”) drama company, hides a rare trait. The church once had two cloisters, and the most ancient (dated 13th century A.D.), is triangle-shaped. Its black and white striped marble columns surround the little garden and come together at an angle towards the brick bell tower decorated by majolica tiles. The cloister, built in 1600, is home to a museum of architecture and sculpture of the Liguria region: as well as a section dedicated to painting and ceramics, majolica tiles and home furnishings, its rooms contain the ruins of many of the buildings that once belonged to the city and the people of Genoa.
