Genoa

Palazzo Ottavio Imperiale - Piazza Campetto 2

On the tympanum of Palazzo Ottavio Imperiale there is a pomegranate tree, and for all the people of Genoa the palace’s name is Palazzo Melograno (pomegranate palace). It’s not a decoration nor a frieze, but a luxuriant living plant that grows over a 1500s building. Some say it was the north wind that deposited a seed on the palace’s door, others say it was planted by a gambling man who won the palace thanks to a card bearing that particular plant. What is certain is that the pomegranate tree, a symbol of energy and fertility, is alive and Genoa’s prosperity depends just on that plant. See it to believe it.
