San Giorgio palace is one of the most important buildings is in Genova. It was built in 1260, is made of a more antique medieval part and the renaissance part facing the sea. The splendid Sea Palace, once home of the council buildings, Customs and Excise, a bank and now home of Genovese Port Authority, was also Marco Polo’s prison. The navigator was imprisoned in its walls by the Genovese and during his year in prison, he related the account of his journeys, which was then to become The Million (The Travels of Marco Polo), to his cell mate.
