THE TROUGHS OF SANTA BRIGIDA

Piazza dei Truogoli di Santa Brigida

The tall buildings with the colourful fronts of via Balbi and via Pré are hiding the troughs which are named after the Santa Brigida river which used to flow through the piazza. The truogoli are public washing troughs, which were still available in several parts of the city until the 60’s and besides being official meeting spots, they were used by washer-women for doing their laundry. The truogoli of Santa Brigida were built in 1656 by the Balbi family and nowadays represent one of the city’s few remaining exemplars.
