Vico delle Carabaghe

An unusual name like the one given the alleyway starting from the Vico dei Castagna has captured many people’s imagination. The road, first known as Calabraghe (lower the trousers), then changed to Carabraghe, is not requesting to pull one’s pants down and is not alluding to an inner fraternity boy gesture. A document from 1500 cites the ancient road in a part of history made up of fighting and aggression, which lit the Superba. The instrument of defence used by the Genovese was precisely the Calabraga, a war implement that was used to throw stones against the enemies. The catapults were taken to the top of the towers of the nearby Soprana Portal, or they were positioned in the tight alleyway, now a silent witness of Genova’s past.
