Although they are giant and robust, there is no need to be afraid of the omenoni (“big men” in the local dialect) that hold the building by the church of San Fedele. Indeed, the omenoni are big men, but also harmless atlantes – big marble statues that serve the function of columns, holding up the structure of the palace. The building was built around 1565, designed by the house owner himself, Leone Leoni, and his son Pompeo: the two sculptors and art collectors hired Antonio Abondio to sculpt the eight classical statues representing the leaders of eight families of defeated barbarians.
