Colonna del Diavolo - Piazza Sant'Ambrogio

Why does the Roman column to the left of the Sant’Ambrogio Church have two holes in it? Legend has it that the holes were caused by the devil head-butting it when he wanted to tempt the bishop to abandon his faith. The saint replied with a kick and Satan went bashing into the column with his horns. He remained stuck there for an entire day before disappearing into the structure, which contains a passage that leads to hell. In fact, the smell of sulphur is still in the air today, if you bring your nostrils near one of the holes, its scent would be detectable straight from the afterlife.
