Vico San Liborio

This was where Filumena Marturano, made globally famous by the playwright Eduardo De Filippo, was born and lived. This is what is written on the plaque in honor of a Neapolitan townswoman, star of one of the most touching texts by De Filippo. The woman, as told by a former next-door neighbor, is said to have lived here in Vico San Liborio, in the Montecalvario neighborhood, when she was young, thus at least 70 years ago. Mrs. Antonietta Musella remembers to have personally known Filumena Marturano: "She was a 17-year old guagliona (young girl in local dialect). The play is a true account of her story. Listen to me: during the war, her daughter was sick and she was poor, that’s why she “lived the high life”; she did exist, I knew her. She was extremely beautiful and everybody in the alley knew her”. As legendary or truthful it may be, it is worth walking across Vico San Liborio to take a dive inside Naples and its stories of a distant time.
