A HARD EGG TO CRACK
Naples
Castel dell'Ovo - Via Eldorado 3
The most ancient castle in Naples, with its Norman style, dominates the Gulf from the tuff rock former island of Megaride. Castel dell'Ovo (literally “Castle of the Egg”) owes its name to a secret hidden in its tough walls; a mystery dating back to the times of Virgil: the Roman poet, considered a magician due to his vast knowledge of the world, is said to have hidden an incredibly powerful egg in the foundations of the castle. The location hosting this good luck charm remains unknown to this day and it has never been found, but legend tells that not only does the stability of the castle, but even the safety of Naples and well-being of its citizens rests upon the egg.
