The Roman theater, now an archaeological site in the heart of Naples, was born in the first century A.D. above another building of Greek origins, that also hosted drama plays. Among the many performers, the Emperor Nero is certainly the most famous, and not because of his less-than-admirable singing ability. Since the citizens of Rome did not appreciate his voice, Nero decided to perform in Naples, where the public was mainly composed of claque and slaves who applauded enthusiastically. When an earthquake broke out during one of his performances, the emperor interpreted it as a sign of appreciation of the gods. So if all that’s left of the theater are its ruins, don’t blame Nero!
