GOD OF PAGANS

GOD OF PAGANS

Naples

Via Tribunali

It may be easily reached crossing through Piazza del Gesù (square of Jesus), leaving behind the obelisk and facing the gut of the old town. Walk along a narrow alley exuding tears and laughter, the writer Rea and the playwright De Filippo will try to distract you along with Santa Chiara and San Domenico Maggiore, but please ignore them for now. Piazzetta Nilo, known as “the body of Naples”, the Greek nucleus with the historic fount of the underground river Sebeto, will be your last hurdle. A few more steps and it’ll be on your right: a fake temple with two columns at its sides and a hanging transept, and the image of the celebrated Saint; but Roman religion and martyr have nothing to do with it. His story belongs to South America, victory, and its ephemeral nature. The holy face is that of Diego Armando Maradona, arguably the greatest soccer player of all time. The relic is his hat. His miracles are two championships and one UEFA Cup.
