MARY HOLDING A GUN

Naples

Madonna con la pistola - Piazza Gerolomini

The master of street art has left his mark in Naples and, like always, nobody has seen him in action. Banksy, the writer without a face, has been to the Partenopian city, and in fact it is the only Italian city in which he has ever painted. Inspired by the Blessed Ludovica Albertoni by Bernini, Banksy painted the figure holding in her hands a hamburger, fries and drink, as a protest against consumerism. Unfortunately, the work is no longer visible, as it was tarnished and covered by other graffiti. The second piece, currently existing and protected by a glass shield, portrays a Virgin Mary with her eyes and arms pointing upwards, to a gun in place of her halo. When the artist painted the stencil, he chose to place it there as it was right by a wayside shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The usual touch of spraying class by the most irreverent and free artist in the world.
