PARTHENOPE AND THE NEW CITY

Naples

Fontana della Sirena - Piazza Sannazaro

Naples was called Parthenope (one of the Sirens in Greek mythology) because, as the Greek myth states, it was founded by the siren that was escaping from Ulysses. Archaeological studies, instead, narrate the story of a city founded by men of sea: it was probably the Greeks who settled that far and cozy land, resting on the Tyrrhenian Gulf. Parthenope was thus born on a hilltop, and ideal position to control both the sea and the surrounding area. The number of Greeks who chose to live in this new land grew more and more, so much that they decided to found another town next to the first: the city was named Neápolis (new city), in other words Naples. A sea of origins!
