Legend tells that it was an angel flying over the Island of Tavolara who first spotted a flock of goats never seen before.
Come to earth to bring Pope Ponziano to heaven, the angel met the yellow-eyed and golden-toothed goats in the area that was later named Grotta del Papa (Pope’s Cave).
The ovines populating the island formed by a majestic rock overhanging on the sea really do have the traits described in the fable, but the their yellow eyes are surely not a sign of the devil, just like the yellow teeth are due to their diet based on Mediterranean scrub. The natural coloring may be given by the sesame-colored flexible wood, or the broom trees, or perhaps the stinking tutsan, with its goat-like scent…
Unless you know how to fly like the angel, the Pope’s Cave is only reachable by sea.
