Despite the actual church of San Paolo is much more ancient – as it was built in the Middle Ages – the belltower and especially the cupola are the undisputed symbols of Olbia. Beside the tall square-based granite tower, the dome has been completely decorated with colorful majolicas in 1939. The two icons stand out in the high portion of the old town, next to the Gallurese-style (typical of the area) church with a Latin cross plan, probably built over a Roman temple. The sacristy contains various silver objects, including two particularly interesting ones: a little crown, and a pair of sandals of the Virgin Mary. Dated 1600, the objects certainly don’t shine as much as the cupola.
