Chairs used to fly in Palermo: it’s true, and a street name (Via delle Sedie Volanti, road of the flying chairs) proves it. There is no magic involved: the flying chairs were litters consisting in a chair strapped to two poles carried on back, and nobles “flew” across town with their urban vehicles to show their superiority over the normal pedestrians. In this street you may find some of the workshops dedicated until the 19th century to the construction and decoration of the chairs, always proportioned to the importance of the flying authority.
