Vuccirìa derives from the French boucherie, or butchery, and in fact the vuccirìa was originally a place where meat was sold. Throughout the years, though, it became a heterogeneous market, featuring the abbanniate (shouts) of the sellers selling all kinds of different products. Today the word vuccirìa means “confusion” in Sicilian dialect. It is the confusion of the market stands that develops across the alleys and squares crammed with sellers and buyers. Spending a morning at the Vuccirìa market means getting lost in unprecedented, flashy and poetic scents and colors. Picture yourself walking among the stands: you will loose count of the bags of legumes, you will be surprised by the fish – still alive on the trays –, and you will be hypnotized by the geometric compositions of fruit, while trying not to slip on the concrete balate paving...
