Two cathedrals, two chef d’oeuvres, and one legend – considered a true story by now – that brings them together. Guglielmo II built the Duomo di Monreale, boasting an impressive outer colonnade with 228 columns, still sober compared to the splendid mosaics present inside it. His brother Gualtiero Offamilio instead built the Palermo Cathedral achieving his goal of creating a façade never seen before. Legend tells that, in their envy towards one another, both of them died of a heart attack upon having seen each other’s project. Of course, this meant neither of them actually saw the final results. Unlike us, who can luckily do nothing but thank them to have made us the heirs of such beauty.
