The Inquisition Museum is one of the most touching locations of the city. Between 1600 and 1700, citizens considered troublesome due to their religious beliefs, political ideas, or social behavior, were locked in the Carcere dei Penitenziati (jail of atonement). A restoration of Palazzo Chiaramonte Steri, a fortress that later became the residence of the Spanish viceroys, has revealed the signs of the presence of an Inquisitorial Court, and what occurred in the prisons. The walls of the palace are completely covered in graffiti, drawings, prayers, and writings of the prisoners, which still today give pause for thought.
