Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele - Piazza Giuseppe Verdi

The name says it all: one of the main opera theaters in Italy is the Massimo (maximum) theatre of Palermo. Along with the horseshoe shaped main hall and the five levels of boxes, the house seats and royal boxes, the galleries and the staircases bestow on the theater a monumental aspect. The theatre is quite a delight for the eyes, but especially the ears: before the show begins it is impossible not to stop in the Pompeian hall, once reserved to men only. Due to special acoustics, those directly under the room’s dome have the impression of hearing their voices at an extremely high volume. But it is only an illusion, since the words said under the cupola are completely drowned out by the sounds from the rest of the room.
