The Beati Paoli was a special pagan congregation devoted to San Francesco di Paola. The term “beato” means religious, and in fact the individuals dressed like monks and pretended to pray, gaining knowledge of the facts that needed their intervention. At night they discussed about the things they had seen and heard, and they accurately planned an adequate revenge. Some were sentenced to death, after being kidnapped, hooded, and brought before the leader. After a haphazard trial, the criminal was struck with a knife. The Beati Paoli condemned, in particular, those who abused of power or of a certain social chaste in order to oppress the weaker classes, but the “monks” also executed personal vendettas. Their courthouse was an underground cave, located under the traditional market owned by their leader. The Beati Paoli cove may be visited to this day. Check your criminal history first, and not only.
