Enter the little door on the side of St. John’s Monastery, and you will find an ancient “spicery”, a historic pharmacy founded by the monks probably around the year 1000.
Inside the spezieria, the monks prepared pharmaceuticals and ointments both for their own community – distributing them through a small window facing the inner court – and for the people of Parma.
Its three frescoed rooms, later owned by Luigi Gardoni and his family of pharmacists, are now a museum where you may view the specialized tools, pots, and furniture of the 15th century.
